Dr. Eric Plemons, Associate Professor, School of Anthropology, and Co-Chair, Transgender Studies Research Cluster at University of Arizona, will open our spring seminar series with his talk, “The Transgender Swap: Transplant Medicine and the Making of Sexual Difference”
WHEN: February 28, 4-5:30pm
WHERE: LSC 304
Abstract: Many transgender people who undergo surgery dream of swapping their unwanted body parts with other trans folks who wish they had them. Once a medical impossibility, emerging technologies suggest that “the transgender swap” is a realistic and even the best way to realize transgender transitions. Dr. Plemons will show how contemporary efforts to materialize sexual difference through the exchange of body parts is reframing surgical discourse about trans patients.
