Talking “Trash”: The Social Role of Deposition within Ancestral Pueblo Villages

Archaeologists spend significant amounts of time trying to interpret earlier stages in the lives of discarded objects. When labelled as “trash,” such objects are largely considered to be wasted, used up, haphazardly placed, and socially meaningless.

In this talk, Dr. Fladd will question the indifference to “trash” in the archaeological record. Drawing on examples from the Pueblo Southwest, she highlights the social identities and relationships that the content and context of “trash” deposits communicate when treated as intentional and significant past practices.
